These Whole30 Dynamite Shrimp A.K.A Bang Bang Shrimp is a shrimp lover's dream! The shrimp is tossed in our sweet and spicy sauce, which is so addicting. Enjoy them as an appetizer, sushi bowl, or lettuce wrap.
Dynamite shrimp was made famous by P.F. Changs, a Chinese-American restaurant chain. Dynamite or Bang Bang Shrimp is breaded and fried shrimp tossed in a chili-mayo sauce.
I love how crunchy, sweet, and spicy this meal is. Traditional Chinese food is packed full of MSG and not good for you.
We use a combination of Arrowroot flour and Coconut flour to make this recipe gluten-free. The result is tender and crispy shrimp that is insanely delicious!
For the sauce Whole30 mayo, sriracha or hot sauce, garlic, and coconut aminos are mixed together. No MSG in this sauce!
My favorite way to enjoy dynamite shrimp is in rice or cauliflower rice bowl. Fresh veggies like cabbage, cucumber, and carrots are added for the perfect dinner.
This recipe is perfect over my toasted coconut cauliflower rice recipe. If you love shrimp just as much as I do, try my cauliflower shrimp fried rice too.

How to make dynamite shrimp
Making Whole30 dynamite shrimp is so easy, here's how to make it:
Step 1: Dip shrimp into a bowl of liquid eggs.
Step 2: Coat shrimp in the arrowroot powder and coconut flour mixture.
Step 3: Place breaded shrimp on a parchment-lined baking tray.
Step 4: Heat avocado oil up to 350°F and fry shrimp until golden brown.
Air fryer shrimp instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Grease the air fryer basket with avocado oil. I like to use avocado spray from Chosen Foods.
- Add breaded shrimp to the air fryer basket making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, then flip the shrimp over and spray with a bit more oil and cook for another 5 minutes or until shrimp is golden brown and crispy.
- Toss with dynamite sauce and enjoy!
Variations
- Lettuce wraps - butter lettuce or romaine make the perfect lettuce wraps for dynamite shrimp and fresh veggies.
- Rice Bowls - serve dynamite shrimp over cauliflower rice or white rice. Top with fresh veggies.
- Tacos - dynamite shrimp make great tacos topped with cabbage, cilantro, and tomatoes.
- Appetizer - Enjoy just the shrimp as a starter like at P.F. Changs.
Equipment
- Dutch Oven
- Fryer Strainer
- Cutting Board
Storage and Reheating
Dynamite Shrimp is perfect for meal prep and grab-and-go lunches during the week. Shrimp will last for 3 days in the refrigerator, and we don't recommend freezing cooked shrimp.
Reheat shrimp bowls in the microwave at 70% powder for 3 minutes or until shrimp is hot.
Other ways to reheat shrimp are under the broiler, air fryer, or toaster oven. The trick is to use a high heat like 400° F for 2 minutes to preserve that crispy texture.
Chef Tips
- Fry shrimp in avocado oil or coconut oil for the best results. These oils have a high smoking point meaning they won't burn.
- When frying, I find that the best temperature is 325°F - 350°F. Frying any higher will make your fried shrimp too dark.
- Shrimp should reach an internal temperature of 145°F before you remove them from the fryer.
- If you want less fat, cook shrimp in an air fryer.
