What is the best Charcuterie Board to use?

Whether you are making this Smoked Salmon Charcuterie Board or a Meat and Cheese Charcuterie board with my Air Fryer Brie Cheese, a beautiful wooden board is essential.

The wooden charcuterie board in this blog post is from  Forest Decor. It's made from 100% olive wood with a live edge, isn't it beautiful?

Check them out and browse their collection of personalized charcuterie boards, animal figurines, wooden decor, and utensils.

Why you'll love this recipe

  • If you're a fan of bagels and lox, this charcuterie platter is a dream come true. It's like your favorite bagel and lox, but with even more delicious options to enjoy!
  • The perfect grazing platter for Easter brunch, Christmas, or Thanksgiving parties.
  • It's a nice change from the traditional charcuterie platter filled with meats and cheeses.
  • Customize this smoked salmon board. It's a great way to use up those olives and capers in the refrigerator.
  • Keep your guests out of the kitchen by giving them a little something to eat before the main course.

Key Ingredients

Here is a visual overview of the salmon grazing board ingredients. Scroll to the recipe at the bottom for quantities.

Smoked salmon, cream cheese, endive, avocado, capers, asparagus, crackers, radish, pickled onions, hard boiled eggs, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
  • Smoked Salmon - I prefer using smoked wild-caught Sockeye salmon for its vibrant color and the fact that it's wild, not farm-raised. However, smoked Atlantic salmon works great too!
  • Cream Cheese - We blended room-temperature cream cheese in a food processor to make it smooth. Garnish it with a drizzle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Everything Bagel Seasoning.
  • Belgian Endive - Here's a delicious gluten-free way to enjoy smoked salmon: I love spreading cream cheese inside and adding a piece of salmon and a few capers. It's delicious!
  • Capers, Bagels, Tomatoes, and Pickled Onions - For the onions, try my Hibiscus Pickled Red Onions recipe, and create your own bagel and lox experience!
  • Asparagus - Salmon and asparagus are a classic pairing, and you can enjoy them together by trying my Oven Baked Salmon in Foil recipe!
  • Radish - The crisp texture and peppery taste of radish complement the fatty and rich flavor of salmon.
  • Crackers - We used the fig crackers from Trader Joe's.
  • Hard Boiled Eggs - Smoked salmon and eggs are a French tradition and you have to try my Smoked Salmon Breakfast recipe.
  • Cumbers - The crispiness of cucumbers adds a nice texture to the delicate nature of smoked salmon.
  • Olives - We used Castelvetrano olives.

See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions + Variations

  • Instead of smoked salmon use gravlax, smoked trout, or smoked mackerel.
  • The cheeses that pair well with smoked salmon are cream cheese, Boursin cheese, or whipped ricotta.
  • For a gluten-free approach, use gluten-free bread and crackers.
  • The only fruit I would put on this smoked salmon charcuterie board is sliced navel or blood oranges.
  • For other condiment suggestions try my Everything Bagel Dressing, it goes great with smoked salmon.

Chef Tips

  • Use a beautiful charcuterie board like this one from Forest Decor.  It's from 100% olive wood and has a live edge, isn't it stunning?
  • I like to place a small piece of parchment paper under the smoked salmon to make clean-up a breeze.
  • Select vegetables and condiments that complement salmon, and avoid using fresh berries-they're better suited for a fruit platter or a meat charcuterie board.
  • When styling your grazing board, arrange the ingredients off-center and in various directions to create a visually appealing display.

Yes, a smoked salmon board is a delicious alternative to the popular meat and cheese board. Set it up before your guests arrive, it will keep them out of the kitchen.

Can you make a charcuterie board in advance?

Yes, I highly recommend preparing a grazing board in advance. However, it's best to assemble it on the day of your party to prevent the ingredients from releasing moisture and becoming visually unappealing.

Can I store leftovers?

Yes, package everything individually in small ziplock bags, and return capers, olives, and pickled onions to their original containers before refrigerating.

Does a charcuterie board have to have cheese?

No, you can include whatever you like on a charcuterie board. While cheeses are commonly featured, you can opt for vegetables, nuts, and condiments instead.
