When making a frozen fruit smoothie, it's important to use the right amount of frozen fruit for a creamy result. Not enough, and you'll end up with a watery consistency.

I tend to buy frozen fruit from the grocery store, but you can freeze your fresh berries and reduce food waste.

Instead of throwing spotty bananas away, I freeze them for my Sugar-Free Banana Bread Recipe.

You'll love sipping on this blackberry strawberry banana smoothie, but you can also turn it into a smoothie bowl like my Strawberry Smoothie Bowl and garnish with your favorite toppings.

Why you'll love this recipe

  • A protein-packed smoothie. We used Primal Kitchens' Chocolate Protein Powder and almond butter to keep you satiated all morning.
  • A great snack for the kids! I like to make a big batch of this smoothie because my kids always want some. It's a fantastic way to sneak some extra nutrition into their diet.
  • A perfect way to use up frozen berries! I love freezing bananas, blackberries, and strawberries when they're getting ripe. Frozen fruit creates the most delicious smoothies!
  • This smoothie is a fantastic grab-and-go quick breakfast because it's easy to make, nutritious, and portable.

Key Ingredients

Do you have frozen fruit in your freezer? Let's make a simple berry smoothie! Gather these ingredients for a refreshing and filling breakfast!

Blackberries, banana, strawberries, almond butter, maple syrup, protein powder, and chia seeds.

  • Blackberries - Add a sweet flavor and purple color to this berry smoothie.
  • Strawberries - Are packed with healthy antioxidants and fiber. Strawberries start to turn quickly, so I like to pop them in the freezer for smoothies.
  • Banana - If you don't have frozen bananas, fresh ones will work great! Having a combination of fresh and frozen fruit makes blending a breeze.
  • Almond Milk - Unsweetened nut milk is preferred for that ultra-creamy consistency, but water, orange juice, or apple juice will work too.
  • Chia Seeds - These are high in fiber, making for a Fab 4 smoothie.
  • Maple Syrup - Depending on what types of fruits you use and whether they are ripe or unripe, you may need to add 1-2 tablespoons of sweetener: maple syrup, honey, stevia, or fresh dates.
  • Almond Butter - Adds a bit of fat, keeping you satiated all morning.
  • Protein Powder - Optional add-in but ups the protein content.

See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions + Variations

  • Avocado - ¼ of avocado can add healthy fats and creaminess
  • Oats - try using oat milk in place of almond milk for a different flavor
  • Greek Yogurt - adds more protein and creaminess
  • Protein Powder - pick your favorite flavor chocolate is delicious
  • Spinach - a great way to pack more healthy veggies into your diet
  • Orange Juice - high in sugar but so tasty in a fruit smoothie
  • Honey - a great alternative to maple syrup

Step-By-Step Instructions

Let's go over the basics for blending any fruit smoothie. Start by adding the liquid first, and finish with the frozen fruit. This method ensures a creamy consistency without any chunks.

Chef Tips

  • Place the liquid ingredients in the blender first to prevent the frozen fruit from getting stuck.
  • Don't use ice because it will result in a watered-down smoothie.
  • You may need to upgrade your smoothie blender. I only recommend Vitamix or Blendtec for smoothies. Other blenders don't seem to give you that smooth texture.
  • Transform your smoothies into popsicles for the kids! It's a fun and delicious way to keep them healthy during the summer. Check out the popsicle molds I use!
  • Transform this recipe into a smoothie bowl with your favorite topping or add-ins.
  • Let frozen fruit thaw for 5 minutes on the counter before blending, making blending easier.

Equipment

The key to making a creamy smoothie is using a super powerful blender. A NutriBullet is a great option for making single-serving smoothies, and a Vitamix Blender is expensive but well worth it.

  • Blender - We recommend Vitamix or Blendtec for the best results
  • Straws - Stainless steel or paper straws are great options
  • Smoothie Cups - Mason jars or this drinking glass with bamboo lids work great.

FAQ's

Are smoothies healthy?

It all comes down to what you put in them. Many smoothies are loaded with sugar, which can make them less healthy. Instead, fill your smoothies with veggies, low-sugar fruits, protein, and healthy fats for a nutritious boost.

Are smoothies good for weight loss?

Smoothies can help keep you full, which supports weight loss. However, be mindful of the calories you add to your smoothie-ingredients like avocados and almond butter are nutritious but also high in calories.

Do blackberries and strawberries go well together?

Yes, strawberries and blackberries go very well together. They have a nice sweetness when paired together and create a very colorful smoothie.

Can you put whole frozen strawberries into the blender?

Yes! It's important to use a high-powered blender like a Vitamix for a creamy consistency. Place the liquid ingredients in the blender first to prevent the frozen fruit from getting stuck.
